Playa del Carmen Mexico is located on the Mayan Riviera of Mexico a short 40 minutes south of the Cancun airport. Playa del Carmen is characterized by gorgeous white sand beaches with azul clear Caribbean water lapping at the shore, and a funky yet sophisticated city with the charm of the small fishing village it was not so very long ago.

Playa del Carmen Mexico has seen tremendous growth over the past 10 years but it has managed to maintain the Playa Vibe that has drawn so many to live here full time or purchase a vacation property to escape to as often as they can manage.

Playa del Carmen has a very international culture where along the streets, in the cafes and on the beaches, you are likely to hear English, Italian, French and German as well Spanish dialects from all over the Latin world. It is this international flair that helps make Playa del Carmen so unique and has helped slow the advance of the US chains that are creeping in more and more.

Playa as we locals refer to the city, usually refers to Playa del Carmen proper as well as the bordering community of PlayaCar. To most the bloodline of Playa del Carmen is the walking street Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) which parallels the beach and runs nearly the length of the city from north to south. To others, the heart of Playa is the beach which runs the length of the city. Certainly the corridor between these two pedestrian arteries is where most visitors will find themselves returning time and again.

PLAYA del CARMEN AREA Vacation Rental Locations - PlayaCar

PlayaCar is the gated residential/resort community bordering to the south of Playa del Carmen.

Phase 1 is the area near the beach where there are some private villas and a couple of condo complexes.

Phase 2 has an 18 hole golf course with villas and condos scattered around the perimeter of the course and through the network of near by streets. To the far south end of Phase 2 are a number of large All Inclusive resorts.

A reasonably strong healthy person would have no problem walking into Playa from anywhere in PlayaCar.

PLAYA del CARMEN AREA Vacation Rental Locations - South Playa

South Playa del Carmen refers to the area from PlayaCar in the south to Avenida Constituentes in the north. Or along the beach, from the ferry dock in the south to the Gran Porto Real hotel in the north. This is the center from which Playa del Carmen has grown.

A fabulous beach where the rumble tumble palapas that provided cheap accommodation to the backpacker set not so long ago, has been replaced by more and more upscale condos and boutique hotels today. Tucked amidst the accommodations are a number of beach bars and clubs which are also becoming more and more upscale.

Just a couple of blocks from the beach is the pedestrian street of Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue). Here too the 'bling' factor is becoming more and more present as the street side stalls selling handicrafts get squeezed out by designer name stores and American chains such as Starbucks. Boutiques, restaurants, bars, small hotels, night clubs and a never ending stream of people strolling along Quinta Avenida, makes this the area to head for souvenirs, a meal, to party the night away, or simply enjoy a coffee at a street side table while visitors from around the world parade by.

PLAYA del CARMEN AREA Vacation Rental Locations - North Playa

The beach and area running a couple of blocks back from the beach, in the north part of Playa del Carmen is the newest area to be developed. Mamitas Beach Club and a few of the other beach lounges/clubs that have sprung up around Mamitas, are where the young congregate during the day. A little further north CocoBeach is still a little less crowded, other than Sundays when local families come down to enjoy a day playing in the sand and water.

The pedestrian walkway, Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue) has extended to the north too and with it more small boutique style hotels, condo projects, restaurants, boutiques and bars. There is a heavy Italian influence here and to some this part of Playa is referred to as Little Italy.

Overall, north Playa is a little newer, a little more dressed up and a little quieter than South Playa. It offers a good selection of dining options, boutiques, bars and of course the beach.
