Casa Ya-Mul-Caan
Riviera Maya
beach front villa on Soliman Bay near Tulum Mexico
for a maximum occupancy of 13 people (no more than 12 adults + 1 child 9 years of under)
5 bedroom main villa + 1 bedroom garden casita

Ya-mul-caan translates from Mayan to 'Love Jointly the Heavens'.   It is this giving of thanks to the joining of heaven on earth and heaven above, or land, water & sky, that this villa has been named.  With such a blessed name, it is only appropriate that you will enjoy a relaxing vacation sharing in that celebration of this magical place where the three elements join.

The owners of Ya-mul-caan have created a somewhat funky, casual and comfortable retreat for themselves that is full of eclectic pieces that never let you forget that you are at that place where sky, land and water meet.  That they have opened it to vacationing guests to experience and enjoy as well... is special.

The main living area is open and vaulted through the second floor to the roofline.  Sliding glass doors on ground level and large windows on the upper reaches provide a bright airy feel and vistas of the earth and sky.  The high ceilings, fans and ocean breeze keep this area fresh even though it is not air conditioned.

Couches, tables and chairs invite you to sit awhile to relax in conversation, a book or a meal together.

This main vaulted living area includes a dining table and a full kitchen tucked off to the side complete with breakfast bar and stools that opens it up to the rest of the main living space.  Here too the vaulted ceiling extends part way into the kitchen creating that open feeling.

Off to the side of the dining room are glass and wooden doors that open into an air conditioned lounge area with TV.  This room connects with a ground floor bedroom that has a King bed and attached en-suite bathroom with shower.  Wooden louvered doors in the bedroom open up to the TV lounge bringing in additional natural light and affording a view to the ocean beyond.

The second Ground Floor Bedroom is off of the living room area.  It has a King bed and en-suite bathroom with shower.  This bedroom also has a wooden louvered window that opens into the living room allowing in more natural light and a view straight through towards to the ocean.  A full size window at the other end of the room looks into the tropical garden on the street side of the property.

Heading upstairs you will find the Master suite plus 2 Guest Bedrooms.   The Guest bedrooms are accessed in such a way that you must walk through the First Guest Bedroom, which has Twin beds, then past the shared bathroom, to get into the Second Upstairs Guest Bedroom, which has a King bed.  This somewhat unorthodox floor plan may not work for some groups but might be ideal for a family who want their children close at hand.

Another unique feature of these two bedrooms is that they have large sliding glass windows that open up to the vaulted space coming up from the living, dining and kitchen areas.  Very strategically placed on the far wall of this vaulted space, are matching sliding windows that open up to the outdoors.  This clever design brings lots of natural light into the bedrooms and provides them with ocean views, even though they are on the back, garden side of the home.

The Master suite is also on the second level.  This air conditioned bedroom is oceanfront with a King bed, sitting area, desk, and access to a large covered terrace.  The terrace has stairs down to the ground level outdoor dining and lounge area and the beach a few steps beyond.  This bedroom also has an attached en-suite bathroom with shower.

Sliding glass doors lead from the Master bedroom to a long thatch covered terrace that stretches the entire length of the building.   Here you will find a table and chairs, plus chaise lounge chairs to steal away a late afternoon cat nap.  A set of stairs from the terrace will deposit you on ground level only steps from the beach.

Heading up from this level instead of down will take you to the rooftop.  Stunning views and another place to chill, are awaiting you here.  This space is calling you for sundowners and star gazing.

Returning to ground level you find another large covered terrace stretching the length of the villa frontage.  Dining and lounge areas plus a grill are all conveniently placed to help you relax and feel comfortable.  Of course the real reason for a tropical beach vacation is the sun, sand, and water and those are just steps away and why the villa is so named Ya-mul-caan.

Villa Ya-Mul-Caan has a private beach side thatch roof palapa to provide shade and of course a place to hang a couple of hammocks.  Chaise lounge chairs and kayaks to explore the beautiful bay are all provided.

Soliman Bay where villa Ya-mul-caan is located is a tranquil bay with an outer reef that keeps the waters calm most of the time making it ideal for snorkelling and kayaking.  A ring of white sand beach stretches off seemingly forever in both directions inviting long walks on the beach.  The bay has a collection of private homes with the only commercial activity a higher end boutique hotel with restaurant.

Just a short 15 minute drive north of Tulum, this tropical hide-a-way location is a world away from all of life's day to day stress, but close enough to amenities that you will not feel isolated should you find the energy to drag yourself away from your personal paradise.

For those groups that require an additional bedroom.  The self contained Garden Casita is available.  It has Twin beds that can be made up as a King.

We are happy to share a few GUESTS COMMENTS from past guests of this villa:

The house is situated on the beach.  Perfect for travelling with children,  you don't have to carry anything.  Jerry and the staff were so hospitable and welcoming.  They want to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.  Top notch customer service.  Water shoes are a must due to the coral reef.  It was easy to snorkel out to the reef and take in all of the assortment of fish.  We even saw stingrays on multiple occasion.  We took the kayaks out numerous times.  What a treat! The water is crystal clear and there was minimal seaweed.  Of course we did see Jerry cleaning the beach every morning, but it wasn't necessary.  I can't saw enough about this villa other than "Thank you" and I hope to return soon.

This villa is just wonderful, the home is kept up nicely and Jere and his family are perfect at being there when they should be and you enjoy a sense of privacy which is vacation perfect. The beach is wonderful and we ate all our meals on the patio, the kitchen is very well supplied with dishes and pans I don't believe any of us lacked for anything when we cooked or mixed drinks. There was ten of us and you could always find a nook here or there for a private moment to unwind when needed, the wifi was good enough to deal with email and such, even skype and netflix worked great. Jere's breakfast was great and the 2 dinners he prepared for us upon arrival and and our last night were very good, the mini tamales and chicken enchiladas were my fav's. Our only suggestions might be to add some hair dryers for the ladies and maybe to have some foam cushion tops available for the beds as our group was split about 50/50 with some liking the firm mattresses and some needing a little more of pillowtop setting. Overall each and everyone of us said they would love to come back, and a little hint for everyone Concord car rental in Cancun are great to deal with.

We just sadly left the little slice of heaven that is Soliman Bay. If you are looking for privacy, peace, and quiet, away from hordes of tourists and all-inclusives, this is your place. Soliman Bay is a lovely, quiet strip of gorgeous beach with nothing but jungle behind it, about a 10-minute drive to Tulum and only slightly farther to Akumal. While is is conveniently located to activities such as archeological ruins, Xel-ha park, Akumal, cenotes, and other interesting places, you might just find that you have all you need right in Soliman Bay. The Bay is warm and shallow and you can walk right out the back door and into the water and snorkel right there. Just swim straight out towards the reef and after a few minutes you'll be surrounded by beautiful underwater sights. For the timid, most of the bay is so shallow you can stand up (but be careful not to stand on or near the living coral...there are plenty of sandy spots where you can do that). It is so easy we took my 85-year-old mother out to a close coral head and she did her first snorkeling ever. The villa is charming and comfortable. Two of the king bedrooms with en-suites are air conditioned, and the other bedrooms are not, but fans are provided and with the breezes off the bay it's not needed. (Be aware that mattresses in Mexico are always hard. If this is a problem, stop at the Walmart in Playa del Carmet and pick up a mattress pad.) There is an HDTV with satellite but we only turned it on to hook it up to our computer (bring a spare HDMI cable for this) to look at our diving photos. Who needs TV in paradise? WiFi was a bit slow at times, but functional. The kitchen is well-stocked with utensils and cookware and there will be a stock of basic staples such as salt, pepper, sugar, spices, as well as the rest of the beer or tequila that the last guy didn't manage to finish up before he left (we had Skyy vodka, beer and a bottle of champagne. We added a bottle of Cuban rum to the stockpile and my husband also left the next lucky guy three Cuban cigars he couldn't bring home since our flight was through the US). On the terrasse is a trunk that holds water shoes, life vests and some snorkeling equipment. The bay is a coral-filled bay so you will want to have water shoes...you're not walking into soft sand into the water...the soft sand ends where the water begins. But that is why we chose this spot...for the easy access to coral. There are two kayaks available as well. The villa comes with a dog named Sparky who absolutely made our week. He is a sweet, old beach dog who lives there and is quiet and friendly, and is provided with regular veterinary care by the owner (vaccinations, etc.). We LOVED him, let him sleep in the villa and I watched the sunrise with him every morning. It was hard to say goodbye. Jerry the caretaker and his staff are very nice, pleasant and unobtrusive. Jerry is a trained chef and he can make you a fabulous meal for about a third of what you'd pay in a local restaurant...DO take him up on this offer and be aware that you will have enough leftovers for lunch the next day! There is a very small convenience store in the alley behind the casa where you can get basic supplies or ice cream, and about 4 villas down the beach (maybe a 3-minute walk) is the fabulous Sahara Café that offers up-scale dining with a view and live music. Also on Soliman Bay is a lower-end outdoor restaurant that is basically a shack on the beach with plastic tables set up in the sand surrounded by palm trees and hamacs...this is Chamico's, and they serve up fresh seafood with cold beer and margaritas. Do try both! Just across the highway, on the jungle side, is the famous Oscar y Lalo restaurant which was also just as amazing. This vacation was everything we expected it to be and so much more! We will definitely be back!!

We stayed for six nights, but I wish we could have stayed longer. The house was beautifully decorated and very comfortable for my family. We traveled with our three children aged, 4, 8 and 10 and they had a blast snorkeling and playing on the beach. They missed having bigger waves, so we drove into Tulum almost daily looking for the big ones! We especially enjoyed the sweet dogs on the property and Jeri, who took care of the house and cooked delicious meals! He also told us where to find great cenotes and snorkeling locations. Muchas gracias Jere!
